Now that the fall semester is upon us, my plans and aspirations for the coming year will center on the theme of moving forward. As a college, we will make progress together in several ways this academic year at Carroll Community College.

We will move ahead to implement and realize the strategic initiatives for Fiscal Year 2014. The initiatives advance the five priorities in the Compass multi-year strategic plan: Student Achievement, Enrollment Development, Partnerships, Continuous Improvement, and Resource Management. The initiatives guide faculty and staff efforts for the coming year in these core commitments in pursuit of the college’s vision. Please find a detailed listing of the FY2014 initiatives in this issue of Today.

We will also continue to make Carroll affordable. The college is offering federal direct loans for the first time this fall. The college now participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. The program allows students and parents to borrow funds at low interest rates to pay for education expenses. The U.S. Department of Education lends the money directly to eligible students and parents through the student’s college. I am pleased to open the doors to a college education through this new funding mechanism that will allow more students to pay the cost of an associate degree or certificate. Please see the story on loans in this issue of Today.

Another way in which students may find college affordable will be through increased student scholarships. The Foundation will continue to raise funds which enable students to fulfill their educational aspirations.

We anticipate another successful Starry Night event, which will be held on Friday, Dec. 6. This elegant, festive evening will once again feature a formal reception with cocktails, a silent auction, live entertainment, and a post-performance dessert reception. Proceeds from Starry Night enable the Foundation to help students, purchase specialized instructional equipment, and support the college’s continuing improvement.

The annual Random House Book Fair is devoted to literacy and education. The upcoming Book Fair will be held Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8 at the college. All proceeds support student scholarships.

I wish to thank the members of our community and our staff who help to make these two signature events possible.

I look forward to working with you to accomplish the successes that I believe we will realize together in fiscal year 2014.
