Inaugural Hill Scholars Class Announced

Carroll Community College welcomes the Hill Scholars Inaugural Class, which enrolled at the college this fall. The Martin K.P. and Kelly W. Hill Scholars Program is a selective admission, honors cohort program for first-year students.

Eighteen Hill Scholars started at Carroll on Aug. 27, 2007, the first day of the fall semester. The students take special honors courses together, while enrolling in other courses specific to their individual interests and majors.

Hill Scholars also participate in an honors seminar each semester, which will focus on service learning, leadership development, career development, opportunities for study abroad, and preparation for transfer.

The program carries agreements with selective private and public four-year colleges and universities to facilitate transfer as a junior.

“I want to extend a sincere welcome to the first Hill Scholars at Carroll Community College,” said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo. “I am most impressed with the caliber of these students and wish them well in their educational pursuits at Carroll. This program offers an excellent opportunity for students to start their journey to a selective four-year institution close to home while realizing significant savings on a college education.”

A President’s reception was held for the students, parents, program faculty and Mr. and Mrs. Hill on Friday evening, Sept. 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Great Hall. Afterward, a weekend retreat at the Pearlstone Retreat Center was held. Students and Hill Scholars Program faculty traveled to the retreat center for a late dinner and planning session, and stayed overnight. On Saturday, they enjoyed a team-building day. A team of certified ‘ropes course’ experts helped them learn about team-building and trust. The students discussed plans for the upcoming four semesters of their two-year degrees, as well as ideas about travel and community involvement through service-learning.

Applications are being accepted for the next cohort of students in the Hill Scholars Program for the fall of 2008. For information, call Kristie Crumley at 410-386-8572.
