Benjamin Spurrier Receives President's Academic Excellence Award

Carroll Community College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo selected Benjamin Spurrier as the recipient of the President's Academic Excellence Award for 2011. Spurrier received the scholarship award from the college president during Commencement ceremonies at McDaniel College.

"I am delighted that Benjamin has received the President's Academic Excellence Award," said Dr. Pappalardo. "According to our faculty, Benjamin was exemplary in his work at Carroll and is clearly deserving of this honor. I congratulate him for his hard work."

Students selected for the award have completed at least 45 Carroll credits, have a 4.0 average, and were recommended by the faculty to the president.

Spurrier started taking classes at Carroll before graduating from high school in 2008. When he became a Carroll student, he chose the Business Administration major after taking a variety of classes to help him make the decision. He also became involved in many activities, including serving as vice president of scholarships for the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, as a student ambassador, and as a Campus Activities Board member. He was also elected to the Alpha Beta Gamma business honor society. His community service included giving bi-weekly presentations on financial planning for those on public assistance.

"Carroll Community College has instructors who are always willing to help and who really care about the interests of students," he said. "I recommend starting here before pursuing an education at a four-year university."

Spurrier has been accepted to the University of Maryland College Park and will pursue a degree in business. He hopes to obtain an M.B.A. one day. He currently resides in Manchester.
