The fall semester is well underway. Our significant increas ein credit enrollment is evidence that Carroll is a thriving and growing institution. As I watched new students enter the doors of our college on the first day of classes, I could see their enthusiasm and love for learning. I offer a warm welcome to each and every student.
Members of the community often ask me, why is enrollment at the college growing so remarkably? I believe there are many reasons. First, I think students recognize the wonderful education we provide. They recognize the support of dedicated teachers, with smaller class sizes than traditional four-year colleges. I have also observed that students are reacting to tough economic times by taking advantage of a quality education at an affordable cost. The number of financial aid requests we receive is certainly an indicator that students are becoming more cost-conscious.
I look forward with much anticipation to our new Classroom Building Four. The additional classrooms, offices, and student co-curricular area are very much needed, and will help to relieve the space constraints we have been working with for the past few years—though parking remains tight.
I also look forward to several new programs, such as a new Health Information Technology degree. Existing nursing and allied health programs continue to grow. Teacher Education, always a popular choice, is enjoying a surge of interest among career changers.
My strategic initiatives for 2009–10 will advance the following priorities in the college’s strategic plan: Student Achievement, Instructional Programs, Technology, Assessment/Improvement, Facilities Enhancement, and the Foundation and Institutional Advancement.
The 14 initiatives for FY2010 are shown on page 3, grouped under the appropriate priority from Compass, the college’s multi-year strategic plan. Also shown for each initiative are the coordinators who oversee implementation of each initiative, and the reporters who will assess their achievement next May.
In closing, I wish to thank our faculty and staff for their dedication and caring. I know they will be guided by a sense of passion for their pivotal role in the education of our students and in the developmentof our community’s workforce.
