One of my strategic initiatives at Carroll Community College is to increase global awareness within the college.

Our Service-Learning program, organized by the Office of Student Life, is a stellar example of how the college broadens the horizons of its students. The program expands student learning through a blend of academic and co-curricular experiences in the form of active service with community partners. It is a win-win situation for both students and organizations.

Examples of Service-Learning include marketing non-profit organizations, conducting research surveys on behalf of organizations, or painting meeting spaces for youth clubs. Last summer, Carroll students helped children of Belize practice their English-language skills during a trip to the country. The experience was transformational for students who came back to Carroll County with a new appreciation for how others live and learn.

Recently, our Service-Learning program won two awards, which is evidence that our program is a model among colleges nationwide (see accompanying article for details).

I am proud of the accomplishments of our faculty and staff who offered this program. Special accolades go to our Coordinator of Service Learning, Ms. Dell Rhodes.

I am especially proud of our students, who perform their Service-Learning projects with tireless dedication. Humanity has many unaddressed needs. It is our hope that through these projects, we are helping meet those needs. Students have found that they can make a noticeable difference in the community through service. The lessons they learn are invaluable, as they continue striving to make a difference.

Indeed, our students help make the community better, one student at a time.
