Robert Brown, Mathematics Department Chair and Associate Professor of Mathematics, becomes enthused when he remembers the day students from all Carroll County high schools gathered at Carroll Community College. On January 14, 2008, students competed in timed tests which centered on their skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Two ninety-minute challenges out of seven total events integrated knowledge from all four subjects. Activities in the competition were constructed by Carroll County Public School (CCPS) teachers. Carroll served as the host site for the inaugural STEM event.
The STEM competition replaced an activity that was formerly held by CCPS called the Physics Invitational.
“The STEM competition was for ninth graders. The activities were fun, competitive, interactive, and located on a college campus for the first time,” said Mr. Brown. “A goal of the event was to stimulate career interest in the STEM subjects,” he said.
“The STEM competition also served as an additional area of collaboration between the public school system and the community college,” said Mr. Brown. Talks are underway for repeating the event next year.
