One of my strategic initiatives is to enhance cultural competency by raising awareness of diversity on campus. To that end, I have commissioned a steering committee led by Dean Steve Geppi to address diversity-related programming at the college. The steering committee oversees subgroups on curriculum, students and learning, employee development, and marketing outreach.

I want to commend the committee for the progress made so far. Courses which have a diversity component have been identified. A wide variety of student activities launched this semester. Employees have attended workshops. All of these efforts have been communicated creatively.

This is just the beginning of a multi-year effort to share with faculty, staff, and students the importance of working collaboratively and embracing our differences. Our efforts are designed to bring attention to our multicultural and global society. My hope is that skills, knowledge, and awareness will develop into concrete actions and attitudes. My goal is that everyone on campus feels welcome and valued.

This issue of Today includes stories which illustrate the importance of diversity. The story on our Spanish immersion trip to Costa Rica contains many comments from students who had a wonderful experience in that Central American country and who improved their Spanish skills. The story of diversity on campus provides greater detail about the fine work of the committee and the results we have accomplished in a very short time.

It is my hope that employees and students feel comfortable sharing differing points of view and relating their own cultural experiences in a supportive atmosphere.

As always, I welcome your feedback about how we can improve our efforts to facilitate a dialogue on diversity at Carroll. If you have an idea, contact Dean Geppi and share your suggestion with him. Together, we can continue to build an open and accepting climate in which to work and study.
