As President of Carroll Community College, I frequently meet with leaders of other institutions and organizations in Carroll County who speak highly of our college. Carroll has a fine reputation as a strong provider of quality education and diverse programs for students from all walks of life.

Carroll has also earned a reputation as the "community's college." Our credit and non-credit partnerships in the county effectively and efficiently employ best practices to serve the educational needs of Carroll County citizens.

A prime example of serving as a community resource is the Carroll Business Path, which is described in a story in this issue of Today. Commissioner Howard announced the launch of this initiative which brings together key players integral to business development. They are the college's Miller Center for Small Business, Carroll County Government, the Carroll County Department of Economic Development, the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Development Center. These partners will combine efforts to offer one place in which an emerging business owner can get the answers needed to succeed.

Another example of the college as a community resource is the Random House Book Fair. Random House, our major partner in this endeavor, generously arranges for national authors to make presentations and conduct book signings at the college. The college is very grateful to Random House for its sponsorship and support of this Carroll County tradition, now in its 15th year. Through the Book Fair, we provide a venue for a regional celebration of reading.

This spring, the college will complete Compass 2015, its three-year strategic plan to guide the college's operations through June 30, 2015. We are currently engaged in the first stage of environmental scanning, identifying those factors that will influence the college's success over the next three years. This issue of Today includes an article discussing 10 national trends that the American Association of Community Colleges believes will affect two-year colleges. Also included on page four is a data table describing households in Carroll County.

In closing, I want to express my sincerest gratitude to college faculty, staff and students for helping to create an atmosphere of excellence at Carroll. Together, you are most definitely an asset to this County.
