College Receives Grant to Expand Nursing Program

The Maryland Hospital Association announced in June that Carroll Community College is the recipient of a $150,000 grant for its nursing program from the “Who Will Care?” Initiative. The grant will be used to fund an additional full-time faculty position and enhance patient simulation mannequin instruction.

The college was one of 17 Maryland schools of nursing, at community colleges and four-year institutions, to receive grants to educate more nurses.

“Less than two years ago, we predicted that unless we increased the number of nurses being educated in Maryland, we would be short 10,000 nurses by 2016,” said Maryland Hospital Association President and CEO Carmela Coyle. “We are thrilled to announce real progress and are committed to maintaining the momentum we need.”

Carroll director of nursing Nancy Perry said, “The nursing program at Carroll will certainly benefit from this grant, and we have already put in place the faculty member who will lead the effort, Nancy Rogers, R.N. Adding nursing faculty allows us to accept more students into the program.”

College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo said, “We wish to thank the leaders behind the “Who Will Care?” campaign for their foresight with this initiative.”

“Who Will Care?” is an initiative that has attracted the broad-based support of concerned hospitals, health care workers, insurance companies, businesses, academia, and citizens. The goal is to double the number of nurses educated in Maryland.
