College Receives National Recognition for Community Service
Carroll Community College has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition in President Obama's administration that a college can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning, and civic engagement.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized more than 700 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice. Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic Service-Learning courses.

On campuses across the country, students joined faculty to develop innovative programs to meet local needs using the skills gained in their classrooms.

"Congratulations to Carroll and its students for their dedication to service and commitment to improving their local communities," said the CNCS's Chief Executive Officer Patrick Corvington. "Our nation's students are vital to our efforts to tackle the most persistent challenges we face. They have achieved impactful results and demonstrated the value of putting knowledge into practice to help renew America through service."

"On behalf of Carroll, I am thrilled to learn about this honor," said Carroll President Dr. Faye Pappalardo. "Our students and faculty accomplish much in the area of service to others. We are being recognized through this honor as being forward-thinking and as working to provide a quality learning experience."

"Carroll is blessed to have a faculty and staff who understand the transformative power of asking students to put their learning into action in the community. Service-Learning is one of the most powerful learning tools we can provide for our students. The assistance it provides within our community strengthens everyone involved," said Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs James Ball.

Director of Student Life Kristie Crumley said,"I am proud of Carroll's ongoing commitment to service.  From Dr. Pappalardo's office, to the faculty and the students, we have put Service-Learning in the forefront of our minds and hearts."

Coordinator of Service-Learning and Internships Shawntay Stocks said "Committed is a word that comes to mind when I think of Carroll's relationship to Service-Learning. Professors, students, and staff members are committed to being a part of change. From direct to project-based service, Carroll's community involvement is inspiring. I am proud to be a part of a community of service-minded individuals."

The CNCS is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, and leads President Obama's national call to service initiative, United We Serve. For more information, visit www.nationalservice.gov.
