President

Now that the spring term has come to an end and summer is upon us, it is my hope that you are enjoying a little time to reflect, relax and prepare for the coming academic year.

Transitions abound in our lives and the transition from one semester to the next is no exception. You have, no doubt, heard the phrase that “when one door closes, another one opens.” We are opening a new door to more opportunities and accomplishments to blossom in anticipation of the coming year.

I am pleased that our college’s Twentieth Commencement held on May 29 was an overwhelming success. I felt tremendous pride when I congratulated our graduates individually on the stage. Please see the story in this issue about the recipient of the President’s Academic Excellence Award, John Jayman.

Our students could not have risen to where they are today without the efforts of our faculty, staff, and administration. I wholeheartedly thank each and every one of you.

The story about the National Council of Instructional Administrators (NCIA) award in recognition of our Reading Redesign project illustrates how Carroll helps students transition successfully into college-level work. This effort will continue to evolve. Look for more exciting things to come from the transitional studies area of the college.

The coming year will bring much progress to the college, including a more proactive approach to campus security. The story in this issue about the “Memorandum of Understanding” between the Sheriff’s Office and the college illustrates how we are ensuring a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus.

Look for more new developments in the areas of academics, continuing education, employee development, and resource management this fall. The next issue of Today will feature my strategic initiatives for 2013-14. This issue includes the scheduled meetings of the Planning Advisory Council for the coming year. I can say with confidence that Carroll is prepared for the challenges and opportunities to come as we open the door on a new academic year.

Dr. Faye Pappalardo
President
