College Prepares for Middle States Team Visit in April

Every ten years, the college is evaluated for reaccreditation. This year, from April 10 through 13, 2011, a visiting team selected by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education will come to Carroll. The nine-member visiting team, led by a Team Chair, will review our self-study report and supporting documentation in addition to conducting interviews to evaluate our compliance with 14 standards.

Once the visit is complete, Team Chair Dr. Anna Weitz, president of Reading Area Community College, will issue her report and it will be sent to College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo for review. Then, a final report is issued by the Team Chair. An institutional response is made to the Team Chair's report. Both the Team Chair's report and the institutional response will be forwarded to Middle States for review and decision.

Through its internal study, the college believes it meets or exceeds each of the fourteen "Characteristics of Excellence" as outlined by Middle States, said Robert Brown, dean of business, mathematics, and sciences. Using the findings of seven internal workgroups, the Self-study Steering Committee has identified several recommendations for future review and action. It is these findings, in addition to feedback from the visitation team, which will provide initial input into the next version of Compass, the college's five-year strategic plan, according to Brown. Compass—Charting the Course to 2017 will be developed during academic year 2011–12.

According to Dr. Michael Kiphart, dean of students, the college has already begun to work on the recommendations and they will be addressed before the visiting team arrives.

On Friday, March 18, a college-wide meeting will be held in the theater to summarize the internal study and recommendations. "Faculty and staff will come away from that meeting with an understanding of the self-study process, internal findings, and will develop expectations for the team visit," said Brown.
