Carroll Community College is a major engine that drives economic development in the county and region. This issue reports on the launch of Advantage C, a rebranding of the college’s business training and services. Advantage C provides local businesses and corporations with a single source of customized training and related consulting, assessment, and facilitation services.

The Board of Trustees received the college’s annual Institutional Effectiveness Assessment Report at its December meeting. The measures report on the performance of the college in meeting the goals in its Mission Statement. (The report is available on the PAC portal site.) They are also useful in evaluating the success of the college’s annual strategic initiatives. This issue includes a table showing how these measures can be used to evaluate our progress on the Compass 2020 priorities of Student Achievement, Enrollment Development, County Economic Development, Advancing Excellence, and Resource Management.

Also, new in this issue is a book review. Redesigning America’s Community Colleges is a critique of existing practices at many community colleges and a primer of a better way, all based on research done by the Community College Research Center at Columbia University. As you read the recommendations, you will note that we are implementing a number of them at Carroll. This college is committed to data-based decisionmaking and a culture of evidence, so it is appropriate that our strategic initiatives reflect the latest in community college research—all in service to student success and program completion.
