The college will hold its Twentieth Commencement on May 29, 2013. I look forward to presiding over the ceremony and to sharing my best wishes with our graduating class.

Commencement holds a special place in my heart because Carroll celebrates its Twentieth Anniversary as an independent institution of higher education in 2013. All graduating classes are special, but this year’s class is graduating during a time that represents a significant milestone for the college.

The college has experienced much growth in enrollment, programs and facilities since 1993. Credit headcount has grown from 2,636 students to 4,103 students last fall. Non-credit enrollment has more than doubled from 4,188 to 8,949. Carroll offered 10 degree programs twenty years ago. Today, Carroll offers over 40 credit transfer and career programs, as well as non-credit classes in workforce development, business training and lifelong learning.

I have fond memories of the growth of the college. I started working at Carroll in 1988. We were still a branch campus of Catonsville Community College, now the Community College of Baltimore County. The college was located in small trailers on Center Street in the beginning. Our small faculty and staff worked closely to develop our burgeoning college. The rapid expansion of Carroll’s facilities at the Washington Road campus since 1990 has been impressive.

The growth of the college is due primarily to our wonderful faculty, staff and administration. They have been stalwart in their passion for higher education. Carroll has developed an excellent reputation in the area as a fine institution of higher learning. It has indeed been a pleasure to witness Carroll’s evolution.

I wish to express my sincerest congratulations to the fine graduating class of 2013. Many of our graduates will transfer to four-year institutions. Others will enter the job market directly. Some students may pursue different paths.

I frequently tell students that there are many things that can be taken away from them in life, when hardships and challenges unexpectedly arise. However, no one can take away the education that is earned. A degree from Carroll is something a graduate will have forever.

I want students to know that they are welcome to return to Carroll anytime. Carroll will always be a resource for them, no matter what path they choose. I wish them much success.
