Student Sean Gill to Speak at Commencement

Sean Gill believes that the opportunity to address his fellow graduates at Commencement is an honor, a humbling experience, and a chance to represent a diverse, talented group of students whom he feels proud to call the Class of 2014.

“What I’d like to pass on to the graduating class is this: we all have stories and we all have hardships,” said Gill. “For some, graduating from Carroll Community College will be a first step. For others, it will be the culmination of much hard work. Everyone who is graduating should be proud of their accomplishments, but we should all, too, be deeply aware that none of us has succeeded in life wholly by our own efforts. We’ve all been helped along at some point through the dedication of a professor, or the understanding of a sympathetic employer, or the support of parents.”

Gill will graduate with an Arts and Sciences degree. His primary area of interest is the study of English literature and film.

Gill has also served as the second editor of The-Quill, the online student newspaper. “Beyond any shadow of a doubt, my time with The-Quill has been the best in my life. While running the organization has often been an exhausting task, it’s also been amazingly fun and so rewarding. Anyone that’s ever attended a meeting knows that the dominant sound is laughter. That’s amazing, given that we are a group that takes their work so seriously. Luke Fisher, the group’s founder, would be so proud to work with students who have taken on his organization’s good work. I’m excited to see the successes of those who follow me.”

The student speaker plans to transfer to the University of Pennsylvania to pursue study in film and literary theory. “In the end, I plan to earn my doctorate in English and return to the university system as a professor.”
