Random House Book Fair Makes College Dreams a Reality

Nineteen-year-old Michelle Shrader and 37-year-old Robert DeBaufre are both students at Carroll Community College. Although their life experiences and career paths vary greatly, they have something in common.

Shrader and DeBaufre attend the college through the generous support of institutional scholarships.

Those scholarships are made possible, in part, thanks to the support of patrons of the annual Random House Book Fair. Proceeds from the Book Fair benefit the Carroll Community College Foundation. The ninth annual event will be held November 12, 2005.

Shrader and DeBaufre are especially pleased that the Random House Book Fair provides an opportunity for the community to support student scholarships, specifically through event sponsorships and a silent auction.

Shrader, former president of the Student Government Organization, believes her Carroll education will take her far. She is considering a career in health care.

“I chose Carroll because of its affordability and convenient location,” said Shrader, whose scholarship helped to ease the financial transition to higher education. “I have been delighted by what I have found.”

DeBaufre is a non-traditional student who returned to school in search of a second career. He and his wife live on the income she earns, so a college scholarship was a welcome benefit for DeBaufre.

“Scholarships open doors to greater opportunities for students who otherwise couldn’t afford to continue their education,” said DeBaufre. “I would like to enter politics one day. A degree from Carroll is my first step in that direction. I now feel like my future has no limits, thanks to the scholarship I received. I especially wish to thank everyone who attended the Book Fair and made this possible.”

Make plans now to attend the Ninth Annual Random House Book Fair on Saturday, November 12, 2005. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. and runs until 4:00 p.m. and will include author readings, book signings, a silent auction, and children’s activities.
