College’s First Nursing Class Achieves 100 Percent Pass Rate on Licensing Exam

Every one of the19 graduates of the first class of the Registered Nursing (R.N.) program at Carroll Community College passed the licensing exam given the summer following graduation.

In order to become a registered nurse after earning an associate degree, students must pass the NCLEX examination for Registered Nurses administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

According to the National Council of the State Boards of Nursing, during fiscal year 2005 (between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005), Carroll was the only college in Maryland—two-year and four-year—whose nursing students achieved a 100 percent pass rate.

“Carroll is proud of the performance of its graduates, given the fact that the required passing rate for Maryland R.N. schools is 77 percent,” said Nursing Program Director Nancy Perry.

In addition, Carroll’s nursing program was recently granted full approval from the Maryland Board of Nursing, the regulatory agency that determines if R.N. programs are in compliance with the Nurse Practice Act. Carroll had been granted initial approval until the first nursing class graduated in May, 2005.

“The significance of this full approval status is that it indicates we have met all the necessary quality standards for educating R.N.s,” said Perry. Full approval is current for five years, she said.

The college’s Nursing and Allied Health Building opened in 2004.
