College Welcomes New Cohort of Hill Scholars

Eighteen students comprising the second class in the Hill Scholars Program at Carroll Community College have begun studies this fall. The students were selected from a pool of 28 applicants for the competitive honors program.

The students in this fall’s incoming class each received scholarships, anywhere from $600 per year to full tuition and fees, depending on need.

The Hill Scholars Program is a selective admission, honors cohort program. The program consists of honors courses linked by a common theme; seminars; and extra-curricular enrichment opportunities. The core of the Hill Scholars Program is a group of general education courses in English, history, philosophy, art, anthropology and psychology. Hill Scholars take two of the designated honors courses and a one-credit honors seminar each semester. The remainder of the 15 credits per semester will be made up of courses chosen for the individual student's major. At the end of the two-year program, students will have earned associate degrees as well as the designation of “Hill Scholar.”

“The entire faculty and staff involved in the Hill Scholars Program are excited about our new class entering in the fall of 2008,” said Kristie Crumley, director of student life. “This class is highly qualified for the honors program and possesses many interesting characteristics. These students come from a variety of Carroll County Public School high schools. This class is characterized by its commitment to their community and to their studies. Many students have held part-time jobs while keeping their high school grades as a priority. We are proud and honored that each of them has chosen to begin their college careers with us in the Hill Scholars Program.”

The new Hill Scholars are, by high school: Nguyen La, Crystal Strauss, and Tatiana Bradshaw (Century); Stephen Peters, Michele Tangires, and Clare Williams (Francis Scott Key); April Gosnell (North Carroll); Sean Boldt and Jillian Long (South Carroll); Theresa McCourt, Kellsye Piper, Kayla Rivera, Colleen Scheper, Aaron Shaw, and Kelsey Weissner (Westminster); and James Carpenter and Megan Shultz (Winters Mill).
