Board of Trustees Approves Smoke-Free Campus

On September 17, 2008, the Board of Trustees of Carroll Community College approved a new policy to establish a smoke and tobacco–free campus. It will become effective on January 2, 2009.

The policy states: “Carroll Community College is a smoke and tobacco-free environment. Smoking and/or tobacco use is prohibited in college-owned or leased buildings and off-campus sites operated by the college, all college property including parking lots, athletic fields, amphitheater, and college-owned vehicles. Tobacco and smoking products restricted from use include, but are not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, pipes, bidi, clove cigarettes, dip, chew, snuff, and snus.”

“Carroll Community College is taking an important step toward a healthier campus by implementing a smoke and tobacco-free campus,” said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo.

“There is a trend among public and private institutions to create smoke and tobacco-free environments,” said Carol Kolb, executive assistant to the vice-president for Academic and Student Affairs and director of Wellness at Carroll. “More college campuses are considering this change, as data suggest that the population of smokers ages 18–24 is declining.”

Kolb heads a committee of faculty and staff which has worked diligently to identify techniques to communicate the change internally. The committee has created a variety of activities and events to assist smokers seeking help with smoking cessation.

Smoking cessation programs for students, faculty, and staff will be held in the coming year at convenient times and locations around campus. Wellness events with health information will be stationed around campus. A recognition event for the smoke and tobacco-free campus will be held in January. For more details about the new policy, please contact Carol Kolb at 410-386-8186.
