The year 2009 is
drawing to a close and I have been reflecting on the college’s success in terms of increased enrollment, national recognition, community partnerships, and the anticipated opening of our new building.

Enrollment surged
in fall 2009. Credit
headcount was up 13 percent over last year, the largest annual increase ever at Carroll.
Both full-and part-time enrollment increased. The total number of students grew from 3,460 to 3,913. I wish to thank all areas of the college for contributing to our wonderful growth—evidence of our continuing service to the citizens of Carroll County.

Last fall’s successful Art and Addiction exhibit encouraged colleges and universities nationwide to replicate the project on their campuses. Several colleges contacted the organizers to learn how to present the program in their communities. A special thank you to Dr. Patricia Santora from Johns Hopkins, Carroll adjunct faculty member Dr. Margaret Dowell, Chair of Fine and Performing Arts Scott Gore, and Discipline Coordinator for Visual Arts Maggie Ball, for their roles in this successful exhibit.

Partnerships are so important to community colleges. Our Continuing Education and Training area is continuously working to cultivate new partnerships with businesses and organizations. Partner relationships have been forged with Maryland’s World Class Consortium, Carroll Lutheran Village, and the Construction and Energy Technologies Education Consortium (CETEC). Additional partners include the Carroll County Historical Society, the Green Building Institute, and the YMCA of Westminster.

Credit partnerships with four-year institutions
thrived in 2009. Carroll recently signed articulation agreements with the University of Maryland Baltimore County and with the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. These agreements provide a clear path of courses students should take at Carroll in order to transfer without loss of credit to those four-year colleges.

Finally, we await the opening of our new classroom building with much anticipation. Classroom and office renovations will also take place in several parts of the Great Hall. The dedication ceremony for the new building is scheduled for January 15, 2010. The year 2010 will be here before we know it. My wish for you and our student body is that the coming year will be as productive and fulfilling as 2009. I look forward to the joys and challenges that lie ahead.
