“Professor Wizard” Performances Benefit College Foundation

Special performances of Professor Wizard's Wonders of Science were held this fall to benefit student scholarships at Carroll Community College. The shows took place October 22 and 23 in the Theater in the Scott Center.

Proceeds from admission benefitted scholarships through the Carroll Community College Foundation.

"Professor Wizard" is Associate Professor of Science Francois Derasse. He has created a collection of science experiments and demonstrations which bring science concepts to life for audiences of all ages. He has performed at the college and has travelled to local schools offering performances for two years now.

"I am pleased that Professor Derasse has found a way to make science exciting for young minds, while also supporting student scholarships," said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo.

"With the increasing demand for the show within the community, I decided to create a fundraiser to fund student scholarships and science education," said Derasse. "I created new demonstrations for the show, including many with a Halloween theme. These included things that are slimy and glow, pumpkins that explode, spooky fog, and demonstrations that made hair stand on end—literally. The rest of the show was a best of Professor Wizard demonstration, like giant smoke rings from an air cannon and liquid nitrogen. College Assistant Lab Manager Sandy Shaw was also on stage helping with props and preparations.

"I try to impart an interest in and love of science to motivate children to study the discipline and develop a passion for science," said Derasse. "The popularity of the show is more than I could have imagined. What excites me is the expression of wonder on children's faces."
