When I considered the theme for the articles in this issue of Today, I decided on persistence. We hear the term persistence quite often. It means different things to different people. Primarily, I am referring to a student’s determination and drive to complete a degree, certificate or other credential -- no matter what challenges lay ahead.

How do students demonstrate persistence? The story about the Early Childhood Education grant describes how child care professionals show determination when they work and attend college simultaneously. This is no easy task. Grant assistance allows students to handle both jobs and school more successfully.

The story on our Summer Bridge program illustrates how customized instructional review helps incoming students move from needing transitional classes to being ready for college courses. Students who commit to this summer program may save time and money, more quickly enrolling in credit classes that count towards a degree.

The story about Chris Bradford obtaining a summer internship with an engineering firm that led to a job offer shows the benefits of persistence. Chris’ hard work and determination resulted in an unusual accomplishment within the engineering world, a job offer before completion of a degree.

A new resource called Career Coach enables self-motivated students to explore career possibilities online. The college’s homepage features a link to Career Coach and its occupational and educational data for hundreds of careers.

Finally, the story about Starry Night reminds us how our donors help to make college a reality for many of our students, and how their gifts enhance the educational experience for all of our students.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank you again for all that you do to encourage students to improve themselves both personally and professionally. Enjoy the rest of the semester!
