As we approach the end of the fall semester and the holidays ahead, I think of all of the significant events and activities that faculty and staff undertake to complete a productive and fruitful beginning of the academic year. You are certainly to be commended for all of your hard work on behalf of our students.

I want to especially thank our faculty and staff for the memorable and touching celebration of my Inauguration. I am humbled by the outpouring of support and encouragement that I felt during many moments of that outstanding celebration. Members of the Inauguration committee did a great job in planning this special day. I also want to acknowledge faculty and staff for all that they have done to make the transition to a new Presidency very successful.

During my Inaugural address, I made several points which bear repeating here. Number one, our ability to be transformational in students’ lives rests with our faculty and staff. You come through with exceptional commitment. In all sincerity, you are my heroes. I say thank you, because it is a rare privilege to lead such an outstanding group of individuals.

Secondly, higher education serves as a catalyst for individual change and achievement. It facilitates the process of interpreting and transferring knowledge. Higher education helps individuals discover talents and develop new skills. Serving a broad range of students is quite a challenge, and one of great import. This community’s college stands as a beacon of promise and hope.

In addition, the river ahead for higher education will be turbulent, but this is not a time to retract. This is a time to be innovative. Carroll is positioned to ride the approaching rapids. We offer multiple avenues for access and we respond quickly to community needs.

Finally, we pledge to our students absolute commitment to creating an engaging and active learning environment, from which they will be well-prepared for all of their endeavors.

To the entire college family, I look forward to our conversations in the hallways about how we can continue to deliver the finest quality education to our students. I look forward to working with our elected officials, donors and business representatives in the community to solidify our reputation as the gem of the county. And I especially look forward to getting to know more students, for whom we pledge our constant dedication to making them a priority in all that we do.

Dr. James D. Ball
President
