As we approach our spring recess, I want to share how some of our students will be spending their break. A group will volunteer their time during “Alternative Spring Break” from April 13-19 in Lewisburg, West Virginia. They will hang drywall and put up roof shingles as part of a Habitat for Humanity project to provide housing for families in need.

Students who participate in the college’s “Alternative Spring Break” are part of a larger community of students who give their time and talents to others. This issue of Today focuses on helping others, a theme which is dear to my heart. Students who find time to reach out to others despite the demands of their schoolwork and employment should be especially commended.

The story of our students working with SERRV International shows how they have blended their creativity and altruism on behalf of those less fortunate in our world. They have also learned about people who work in poor countries and who demonstrate an admirable work ethic despite the obstacles they face. The story on our VITA program presents another illustration of how our students assist low-income residents, in this case with their tax returns.

On a final note, I want to share the news that 81.5 percent of the first-time students starting college at Carroll last fall are continuing their studies here this spring. This is the highest fall-to-spring retention rate for new students in the history of the college!

I wish you a splendid spring break and look forward to the excitement of all that is to come at the end of this semester!
