Students Unveil 3D Periodic Table of the Elements

When students Nicholas Cain and Wayne Jones think of chemistry, they consider the subject a fun and enjoyable area of study. Cain and Jones brought attention to the joy of chemistry to other Carroll students when they unveiled a wooden, four-foot by eight-foot periodic table of the elements that is mounted on the wall outside the chemistry labs on the third floor of the K Building. The project was unveiled before administrators and faculty at a January celebration. The wall hanging was conceived and constructed by Greg Stange, a member of Carroll’s student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

“The ACS granted official status to the student chapter last semester,” said Cain, who is president of the chapter. “The project is intended to express the club members’ appreciation to the wonderful science and math faculty at Carroll. Our inspiration and motivation begin with our instructors,” said Jones, public relations officer of the ACS student chapter.

The periodic table was made from 2’ by 4’ wood boards that were cut into over 100 square pieces that were sanded and mounted onto a flat board. The pieces vary in depth representing their properties, giving a 3D impression. The blocks were imprinted with chemical symbols and painted with high-gloss paint. The assembly team spent more than 100 hours completing the project.

The students met with College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo about the cost of the project. She arranged for the college Foundation to provide some of the funds needed for materials.

Dr. Pappalardo praised the members of the student chapter of the ACS. “The unveiling of the periodic table of the elements represents a truly unique and creative approach to making science interesting to all students.”
