As you will read in this issue of Today, I have begun working with the Planning Advisory Council on the development of the college’s next multi-year strategic plan. I have determined that this will be a five-year plan, guiding the college through June 30, 2020. Hence the plan will be called Compass 2020, keeping the nomenclature first introduced in the spring of 2000.

Four principles will drive the determination of the priorities and strategies in our next Strategic Plan. Of primary importance is maintaining and enhancing the quality of instruction, programs, and services we provide to Carroll County and its businesses and citizens. The reputation the college enjoys for providing an educational experience of the highest quality is well deserved and will forever remain our steadfast commitment.

We will continue to focus on the student and on meeting community needs. We are the community’s college, and though our mission is broadly comprehensive in its scope of services, it is focused on serving the residents, employers, and organizations of Carroll County.

We are committed to attracting and retaining a superior workforce. It is our people that make us the quality institution we are. We will strive to offer competitive compensation to faculty and staff.

We will be good shepherds of the resources entrusted to us. We will operate efficiently and carefully align resources with our priorities. We will continue to offer students higher education at the best value in the marketplace.

I want to acknowledge the generosity of our friends and donors who support the College Foundation. Due to their dedication to the college, the Foundation was able to contribute to the college’s budget enabling the college to reduce its planned tuition increase for FY2016 from $8 per billable hour to $6 per hour.

Our instructional programs are the core of what we do. The key driver of Compass 2020 will be determining the instructional programs, credit and noncredit, that we will introduce or enhance over the next five years. We will evaluate new programming by its ability to attract new student populations to the college, utilize existing resources, provide a positive return on investment, and add value to the community.

Meetings of the Planning Advisory Council are open to all college employees. You are welcome to come and express your views on the college’s future path. Meeting agendas, minutes, and copies of presentations and reports to the Council are all available on the C3 Planning Advisory Council portal site. You may also communicate through your department or office representatives on the Council.

I will be announcing the Compass 2020 priorities and strategic initiatives for FY2016 at the collegewide meeting on June 3, 2015.
