Health and Exercise Science Program Begins this Fall

An increase in health clubs is spurring demand for qualified instructors to plan and oversee client training. In response to this growing need, a new field of study at Carroll Community College called Health and Exercise Science will be offered this fall.

Upon completion of the Associate of Arts degree in Arts and Sciences—Health and Exercise Science, students will know how to design a safe and effective exercise regimen for both individuals and groups, supervise fitness testing, and offer health education information to various populations, ranging from people who are relatively healthy to individuals with chronic disease.

Graduates will be well prepared to transfer to a four-year allied health bachelor’s degree program. Examples of further study include health and exercise science, athletic training, health education, nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, dietetics, nutrition, and sports management.

Graduates with an associate degree will also be eligible to apply for the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health and Fitness Instructor certification examination, which would enable them to pursue a career as a personal trainer, fitness consultant and/or a health and fitness professional.

“A personal trainer, fitness consultant, and a health fitness instructor have the potential to find employment in a fitness center, hospital, rehab center, retirement community, health education center, or recreation center, for example,” said Brady Slater, an adjunct instructor in Health, Physical Education and Wellness and human performance lab supervisor.
