Academic Area Reorganized

By Sylvia Blair

The fall, 2007 semester will begin with a major change in the academic organization of the college. Formerly, the college was organized into seven academic divisions headed by faculty chairs. The seven chairs reported directly to Dr. James Ball, vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, and dean of the faculty.

Under the reorganization, two new dean positions were created. Ms. Judith Coen is now dean of Business, Mathematics, and Sciences. Mr. Steven Geppi is now dean of Arts, Letters, and Social Sciences. The two new deans each oversee five department chairs, for a total of ten departments organized by discipline. Individual faculty members report to the new chairs. Instructional Technology, headed by Dr. Edward Crook, also reports to Ms. Coen.

As vice president of Academic and Student Affairs and dean of the faculty, Dr. Ball oversees the entire new academic structure.

“I am very pleased with the new supervisory composition of the college faculty,” said college president Dr. Faye Pappalardo. “The reorganization reflects a recognition that as the college grows in enrollment, the management of the organization must keep pace with the changing times.”

“The college has organized its academic departments to create smaller units that allow for streamlined communication and more efficient daily operations, specifically to address the workload of hiring and supervising adjunct faculty,” said Dr. Ball. “Now, individual faculty members feel closer to the decision-making process,” said Dr. Ball.

“While change can be difficult at times, I want to commend our faculty and staff who handled the reorganization in an extremely positive and professional manner. I wish to thank them for their role in this process,” said Dr. Ball.
