College Breaks Ground for
New Classroom Building

Carroll Community College held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new classroom building on Thursday April 17, 2008. The ceremony, held at the construction site on the south side of campus, celebrated the local and state partnerships that led to the approval of the construction of the new building. A new parking lot is also part of the project.

The building will be approximately 80,000 gross square feet. It includes classroom wings for English and mathematics instruction, general purpose classrooms, two science labs, six computer labs, 48 faculty and staff offices, and space for co-curricular activities. The child development center will re-locate to the new building. A prominent feature of the new building is a full-service cafeteria with expanded seating area.

The building cost of $36.5 million will be covered by state funds ($21 million), Carroll County ($15.2 million), and private funds ($265,400). Grimm and Parker is the architectural firm and C.E.R. Inc. of Baltimore is the general contractor. The building is expected to be completed in time to open in September 2009.

The building will accommodate enrollment growth in existing programs and allow expansion for the following programs that are of critical demand in Maryland: Criminal Justice, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Teacher Education, and Information Technology.

In addition, the facility will support expanding continuing education offerings. The building includes business conferencing capabilities, and its proximity to the Hikel Business Training Center will allow for easy access to training rooms for breakout sessions.

The project also includes 9,600 square feet of renovated space within existing campus structures, construction of a new 258-space parking lot and access roads, and all grading, utility, storm water management and landscaping work necessary to serve the new building.

County Commissioner Michael Zimmer, College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo, Past Chair of the Board of Trustees David Bollinger, Senator Larry Haines, and County Commissioner Julia Gouge at the groundbreaking ceremony.
