Random House Book Fair Attracts Book Lovers, Families

The college hosted the Seventh Annual Random House Book Fair on November 8, 2003. The Book Fair, now a Carroll County fall tradition, benefits the Carroll Community College Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit corporation founded in 1994 to develop private financial resources to fund student scholarships, faculty development, instructional equipment, capital projects, and other needs of the college.

Maryland First Lady Kendel Ehrlich served as an honorary chair of the Book Fair and read for many of the children in attendance. Featured authors speaking at the Fair included J.C. Greenberg, author of many books for young people including the popular Andrew Lost series, and Jill Connor Browne, founder of the Sweet Potato Queens® and author of two books about the Queens that have sold over 1.4 million copies worldwide.

Kevin "Kal" Kallaugher, political cartoonist for the Baltimore Sun and The Economist magazine, kicked off the Book Fair Friday evening with a talk in the Scott Center theater. WBAL Channel 11 news anchors Mindy Basara and Stan Stovall presented a workshop Saturday afternoon examining the similarities between authors and news reporters.

In addition to author readings, book sales and signings, and a silent auction, winners of the seventh annual Student Writing Contest were announced. Events for children included an outdoor climbing wall, Children's Story Time Fun hosted by the Carroll County Public Library, face painting, and the Baltimore ZooMobile.

The Eighth Annual Random House Book Fair will be held November 13, 2004.
