Carroll Named Top Ten Digital Community College

By Sylvia Blair

Carroll Community College has received national recognition for its use of technology by being named one of the Top 10 Digital Community Colleges in 2005. This honor is bestowed on select community colleges by the Center for Digital Education and the American Association of Community Colleges.

The ranking was established based on the third Digital Community Colleges survey. The survey examined how community colleges are using technology to streamline operations, and to better serve students, faculty, and staff. More than 200 community colleges across the country participated in the survey.

Top colleges were grouped into three categories based on city and student population. Carroll was recognized within the mid/suburban category.

“I am delighted that Carroll has earned this honor and has surpassed expectations for campus technology,” said Dr. Faye Pappalardo, president of the college. “I want to acknowledge our Information Technology staff, who work hard every day to research and implement technology improvements.”

“The college has an objective to provide state-of-the-art learning resources to all of our students and business partners,” said Alan Schuman, executive vice president of Administration. “The college is proud that, through its partnership with the Carroll County government, we are able to dedicate the financial resources to support technology.”

“The award is really a college-wide achievement,” said Rick Gould, director, Information Technology at Carroll. “The leadership comes from Dr. Faye Pappalardo and the executive team. The faculty, information technology team, staff, and students work together to bring the executive vision to reality. Carroll is building a learning environment where all students have an advantage that helps them develop the knowledge and skills they will need to meet their academic and workplace goals.”

The college has provided students ready access to computers for in-class instruction, on-line research, and assignment preparation with the latest software. “Students who transfer from Carroll to four-year universities often comment on how they miss the superior technology they enjoyed at Carroll,” said Dr. Craig Clagett, vice president for Planning, Marketing and Assessment at the college. “This national recognition is validation of our claim that we provide better technology to our students.”
