Class of 1994 Graduate Returns to His Roots

By Sylvia Blair

Steve Pipes says he has fond memories of his years as a student at Carroll Community College. He is a graduate of the class of 1994, the first official graduating class of the college.

Pipes doesn’t have to go far to be reminded about those days. He now works at Carroll in Continuing Education and Training, to support technology for businesses and students.

“I make sure that the needs of my clients, both students and faculty, are met in our computer labs,” explained Pipes.

Pipes credits his education at Carroll for helping him to set career goals. “Carroll helped me to decide which direction I wanted to take in my life,” said Pipes. “After my two years at Carroll were complete, I was much better prepared academically and had a sense of direction.”

After finishing his studies at Carroll, Pipes attended UMBC. Pipes graduated in 1996 with a degree in Information Systems and Psychology. He then accepted a job with Bank of America as a systems engineer. A few years later, he studied at Johns Hopkins University for a semester.

Pipes’ direction in life changed when he moved to Spain and lived there briefly. Upon his return to this country, Pipes returned to private industry as a database administrator. After time passed, and Pipes established significant workplace and computer skills, he thought about the possibility of obtaining a position at Carroll.

“I enjoyed my first two years of college at Carroll so much,” said Pipes. “I thought there would be no better place to work than Carroll. Fortunately, I was hired to join the staff at the college.”
