Dr. Sherry Glass Retires After 22 Years of Service
Dr. Sherry Glass

Dr. Sherry Glass gazes upon the cherry blossom trees in full bloom on the campus of Carroll Community College and fond memories come back to her. The trees were planted under her direction to serve as a Holocaust Memorial tribute from the students, faculty, and staff. The project, which was initiated in the mid 1990’s, has blossomed into a collection of mature trees that mirror the growth of Dr. Glass’s career at Carroll. After 22 years at the college, Dr. Glass will retire effective June 29, 2007.

Dr. Glass retires from the position of Executive Assistant to the President and from a career that has influenced many aspects of the college. She began at Carroll in March, 1985. She worked both at the South Center and North Center Street buildings.

“I actually came to Carroll as a returning student looking for a career change and took many computer programming classes,” said Dr. Glass. “I so enjoyed the atmosphere and the enthusiasm of the staff that I asked Dr. Linck, the Executive Director of the college, for a job. I first volunteered and did several research projects, handled the book store, and then applied for a full-time position,” said Dr. Glass.

Next in her career, Dr. Glass created a new program for women and men returning to the job market, called the Displaced Homemaker Program. This was one of her proudest accomplishments. She served as director of Student Support Services; director of Innovative Learning Programs; interim executive director of Institutional Advancement and College Foundation; and executive assistant to the President.

What has Dr. Glass observed about the growth of the college during her tenure here? “It is a very exciting place to work. Carroll is a place where students come first. The bricks and mortar have definitely been greatly enhanced. Throughout my tenure at Carroll, it has always been evident that the faculty, administration, and staff are making decisions based on what is best for the students. That commitment has never wavered,” said Dr. Glass.

Dr. Glass’s personal and educational background is as rich and varied as her career. She has a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University, a master’s degree from McDaniel College, and a doctorate from Morgan State University. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, biking, reading, traveling, and cooking.

Dr. Glass is a Tennessee native. She is also an avid traveler. “I have had the opportunity to travel to 49 of the 50 states—hopefully Hawaii is in my future.” She has traveled through all the provinces of Canada, throughout Europe, and parts of Central America.
