Class of 2007 Reflects On Graduation

Graduation from college brings mixed emotions, of sentimental feelings blended with excitement over the future. Carroll Community College graduates often take the time to share their enthusiasm for the college by writing notes and letters. Here is a sampling of some of the comments the college has received this year from its graduates:

A Letter from Jaime Sommerfield

I relocated here with my family from New York in November 2005 and decided to go back to school for a career change. I began attending Carroll Community College in January 2006. I attended as a full-time student. I am also a stay-at-home mom who gave birth to my second child in the middle of the fall semester and still managed to receive a 3.3 GPA. I have been accepted to and will be attending Towson University this fall for Health Education. Carroll instructor Mary Kemp was an inspiration.

A Letter from Victoria Childs

I am the first person in my family to pursue an education past high school and have been doing so since 1991. There have been many bumps in the road, but when I became a mother in 1995, I knew I wanted something more for my children. I now have four daughters and I have kept my original goal for them in mind, while being an example to them of how crucial higher education is. While at Carroll I discovered my passion for history. Any of my friends and family can testify that it is a passion I love to share at every opportunity. I plan to attend McDaniel in the fall and pursue my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history. I want to teach college students and hopefully inspire them the way that the Carroll history department faculty have inspired me.

A Letter from Jolene McKenzie

I am the first of my immediate family to pursue a four-year degree. I have successfully enrolled full-time at Millersville University of Pennsylvania for the fall, 2007 semester where my aunt also attended several years ago. There I will finish my last two years of school to get my bachelor’s of science degree, with a major in Meteorology and minor in Mathematics. When I finish my degree, I plan to apply for a meteorologist position at the National Weather Service in Silver Spring.
