Three Graduates Receive President’s Awards at 23rd Commencement Ceremony

Three graduates were honored by college president Dr. James D. Ball at the college’s 23rd Commencement held May 25, 2016 at McDaniel College. Emily Galen received the President’s Academic Excellence Award. Courtney Scoone and Sabrina Dorsey received President’s Transfer Scholarships.

The criteria for the awards, which are given personally by Dr. Ball, are a 4.0 grade point average; completion of at least 45 credits at Carroll; recommendations from faculty; and strong evidence of involvement in co-curricular and service-learning activities on and off campus.

Galen completed a rigorous program of study that included Hill Scholars honors courses as well as mathematics and science courses at the highest levels. She did so while balancing a wide array of co-curricular and service-learning activities. Galen also completed Carroll’s Leadership Challenge program and served as a member of Carroll’s Intercollegiate Math Team. She works at a local athletic club as a lifeguard. Galen’s career plans continue to develop due to her wide interests and varied talents. She plans to attend a four-year college to study mathematics or other STEM-related field.

“Emily clearly emerged as the top candidate among a competitive group of students who qualified for the President’s Academic Excellence award,” said Ball. “I am very proud of Emily’s academic achievements and contributions to student life at Carroll. She stands out as a scholar and a leader.”

“What I found most beneficial about Carroll was the helpfulness of the instructors and other staff, such as those in Advising and Student Life,” said Galen. “In my time at Carroll, I have never had an instructor I didn't like or who wasn't willing to help me if I needed it. I feel honored to receive this award. I am grateful to Dr. Ball for offering this award and recognizing my work at Carroll.”

Courtney Scoone will be transferring to Stevenson University next year to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She was very involved in Carroll’s Student Education Association; an active participant in Carroll’s Open Houses; a Student Ambassador; a participant in the Leadership Challenge program; and a frequent volunteer at her church.

“Courtney’s activities on and off campus are extensive and laudable,” said Ball. “It is obvious that she is an involved and committed individual. She is to be commended for her efforts at Carroll as well as for her community contributions.”

“I had a rigorous schedule each semester at Carroll, but I made sure that I was dedicated to all of the commitments that I made,” said Scoone. “My hope is that I can inspire others by the journey that I enjoyed during my time at Carroll.”

Sabrina Dorsey has devoted many volunteer hours at Carroll Lutheran Village and the Humane Society. One of the faculty who recommended her said: “Sabrina has been a conscientious student and a pleasure to have in class. Sabrina also exhibits a critical ability to apply what is learned in the classroom to her life outside college. She has proven to be a true leader and will succeed in any career path that she follows.”

“It is apparent that Sabrina keeps a well-centered perspective regarding higher education and personal goals,” said Ball. “Her performance at Carroll has been nothing short of excellent.”
