Dr. Robert Wack Delivers Commencement Address

Robert Wack, M.D., delivered the Commencement Address at the college’s 23rd graduation ceremony. Dr. Wack currently serves as President of the Westminster City Council. “I am extremely pleased that Dr. Wack accepted my invitation to serve as Commencement speaker,” said College President Dr. James D. Ball. “I believe Dr. Wack is a renaissance man in the purest sense of that term. He is accomplished in many disciplines, and delivered an inspiring talk to our graduates.”

Dr. Wack received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from Georgetown University. He served seven years on active duty in the US Army Medical Corps and was honorably discharged at the rank of Major. He moved to Westminster in 1997 and worked for 12 years at Carroll Hospital Center, where he led the Pediatric Hospitalist program. In 2009, he began working at Frederick Memorial Hospital, where he successfully implemented a combined Pediatric Emergency and Inpatient Unit.

In 1999, Dr. Wack co-founded a telecom start-up named Colosafe. He later served on the Carroll Cable Regulatory Commission representing the City of Westminster. In 2003, he was elected to the Westminster City Council. In 2004, he participated in the planning and assisted with the development of the Carroll County Public Network, a publicly-financed, built and operated middle mile network that connects schools, government buildings, the library, the community college and other county anchor institutions. In 2012, he led the planning and implementation of the Westminster Fiber Network (WFN), the first community-wide gigabit fiber network in the mid-Atlantic region. To build upon the unique opportunities created by the WFN, he co-founded MAGIC, the Mid-Atlantic Gigabit Innovation Collaboratory, which is a technology incubator based in Westminster.

Dr. Wack co-founded Access Carroll, a non-profit clinic providing health care to low- income, uninsured residents of Carroll County. He also served on the boards of several other non-profits and currently serves on the board of Target Educational and Community Services.
