Q and A with Student Commencement Speaker Olivia Hare

Olivia, how did you feel when the college asked you to be student speaker?

I felt so honored when asked to be student speaker. The class of 2017 is an outstanding class with extremely intelligent and involved students. It was very humbling to address my fellow students at Commencement.

What are your background, major and interests?

I received my associate degree in Arts and Sciences. In the fall of 2017, I will be attending Stevenson University as a Business Communication major with an interest in marketing and social media. The resources available at Carroll gave me the skills I needed to land my first internship this semester as a design and communications intern.

I am very passionate about involvement on campus through clubs and organizations. I served as the vice president of Fellowship for the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. I was also a student ambassador and new student orientation leader, which allowed me to introduce prospective students to Carroll and all that it has to offer. I was also involved in the Advanced Leadership Challenge program.

How did Carroll help you get to where you are today?

Carroll has provided me with the skills and experiences I needed to step outside of my comfort zone. The employees at Carroll took the time to understand my goals and connected me with the perfect resources to achieve them. I would have never run for positions such as vice president of Fellowship before, but Carroll provided me with the skills and confidence to do so. The Career Development Center provided me with the resources to land my first internship as a design and communications intern. I can always rely on the staff at Carroll to have my best interests at heart. I cannot thank the Carroll employees enough for all that they have done for me.

What did you think about the instructors and the programs?

When first attending Carroll, I automatically felt welcomed by the staff and community. I built close relationships with professors and employees on campus who took the time to understand my personal goals and aspirations. I appreciated the small class sizes because the professors are able to create one-on-one relationships with students to understand their needs. Every professor I had at Carroll has been extremely helpful and motivated me to my push myself harder. I never experienced professors as kind and caring about student’s futures than the ones at Carroll.

What were some of your favorite experiences at Carroll?

One of my favorites was attending Student Advocacy Day in Annapolis with my fellow students and Dr. Ball. We met with the senator and delegates of district 5 and discussed matters that are important to students. It was amazing to speak with the legislators and feel their support for community colleges. Another one of my favorite experiences was attending the MCCADA student leadership conferences through the Leadership Challenge program. We met with student leaders from around Maryland and discussed how we could improve our campuses and communities.
