Long-time Trustee Barbara Charnock Delivers Commencement Address

Barbara Charnock, the longest-serving member of the college’s Board of Trustees, delivered the Commencement Address at the ceremony held May 22, 2017 at McDaniel College.

Her service to the college totals 33 years. She will retire from the Board of Trustees this June.

“Mrs. Charnock has been an outstanding steward of the high-caliber education which Carroll provides to its students,” said College President Dr. James D. Ball. “Carroll has prospered and thrived under her leadership.”

“Mrs. Charnock was exactly the right Commencement speaker at the right time,” said Ball. “She is a wonderful role model for our graduates. Her work on behalf of the college always put students first. Her legacy will be the thousands of students who have entered to learn and exited the college doors bound for success.”

“Mrs. Charnock has been a valuable asset to Carroll,” said Board of Trustees Chair Diane A. Foster. “She offers a comprehensive understanding of community colleges and unwavering support of the students they serve. Education is her passion.”

“I was extremely honored and humbled by the invitation to serve as Commencement speaker,” said Mrs. Charnock. “I hope my remarks inspired the graduates to become the best they can be—confident members of society whose impact is felt throughout the entire community. I will always keep the students, faculty, staff, administration and board close to my heart as I retire from the board this year.”

Mrs. Charnock served on the Board of Trustees for twenty-four years. For nine years prior to that, she was a member of the first Advisory Board of the college. Mrs. Charnock served as chair of the board for three terms, from 1993 to 1995; from 2002 to 2004 and again from 2010 to 2012.

Mrs. Charnock taught middle school in Baltimore County for 30 years. She has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Education from Towson University.
