One in Four Are "First Generation" College Students

The Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) conducted in April 2010 included a question asking Carroll's credit students to identify the highest educational attainment of their father and mother. A total of 493 respondents identified the educational level of both parents. Nearly a fourth (24.5 percent) indicated that neither parent had ever enrolled in postsecondary education. Such students are commonly called "first generation college students."

Approximately a fifth had at least one parent who attended college, but neither parent had earned a degree. Combining these respondents with the first generation students, nearly 44 percent of the college's students come from families where neither parent is a college graduate.

For a slight majority of students (56 percent), one or both of their parents had earned an Associate's or higher degree. One in three students came from families where both parents are college graduates:
