Catching Up with:
Graduate Meagan Thomas

Meagan Thomas is a 2009 Carroll graduate who is now the research manager for the Reptile and Amphibian Lab at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. There, she conducts research related to reptile and amphibian ecology and conservation. She works on projects related to diamondback terrapin and diamondback rattlesnake conservation on National Wildlife Refuges in South Carolina and Georgia. She also helps the students at Davidson to design research projects of their own, analyze data, and disseminate their results. Thomas is in charge of keeping the lab and its equipment in a constantly functioning state, and occasionally helps design and implement outreach programs geared towards educating the public about reptiles and amphibians.

During her Carroll days, she was a general studies major who always planned on majoring in biology. “Carroll helped me to meet the general education requirements so that I could transfer to a four-year university. My favorite professor was Dr. Raza Khan, who is a great mentor and teacher with an amazingly strong passion for the field of chemistry. Not only was he great at inspiring students, but he also works to show students that regardless of their interests, chemistry always plays a role in their lives.”

Thomas has two bachelor’s degrees from Towson University, one in Organismal Biology and Ecology, and the other in Animal Behavior. She also has a master’s degree that she earned from Eastern Illinois University. Her master’s thesis involved the use of stable isotope analysis to elucidate dietary roles within an invertivorous snake community.

“I love Carroll because it has something for everyone,” said Thomas. “If you aren’t sure what you want to major in, Carroll offers an affordable way to take a variety of classes and to help you decide how you want to shape your career. Or in cases like mine, where I have always known what I wanted to major in, Carroll has transfer programs that are specifically designed to help get you into the school and major of your choice.”
