This year, the college is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Twenty years ago, Carroll Community College was established with its own governing board, separating from Catonsville Community College after being a branch campus since 1976.

I believe Carroll’s growth and accomplishments since 1993 are truly remarkable and inspiring. I have personally witnessed the transformation of Carroll as a college with limited resources in the early years to a thriving source of higher education today.

Many individuals have played a role in our development, including the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, community members and elected leaders. I am most grateful for all of the support we have received over the years.

When I reflect upon the college’s growth, I remember how modestly Carroll began. The college was originally located on Center Street with limited space and a small number of programs. Realizing the potential for growth, the County purchased an 80-acre parcel on Washington Road in 1978. Twelve years later the Washington Road campus opened with two buildings, the Great Hall and classroom building C. During this time, County support for a community college independent from Catonsville was growing.

Carroll became independent from Catonsville in 1993. For the first time, Carroll County had a community college of its own. In subsequent years, enrollment grew dramatically. New programs were created. Additional buildings were constructed to meet the growing need for facilities.

Carroll is celebrating its 20-year anniversary with a series of events that kicked off in December including a holiday luncheon, viewing of a commemorative video, a Valentine’s Day appreciation for students, a college history exhibit, and a President’s Luncheon at the Random House Book Fair.

Our commencement speaker this May will be Judy Coen, a former professor, dean and department chair with 37 years community college experience. Judy will offer unique insights into the history of the college. An employee appreciation luncheon at the end of May will close the 20-year anniversary celebration.

I wish to express my appreciation to the anniversary planning committee for their creativity and hard work. I also want to extend my gratitude to the Board of Trustees for their stewardship of the college. I wish to acknowledge the County Commissioners and State Delegation for their support. Our students also deserve a special thank you for realizing the value of a Carroll education when they “enter to learn.”
