20-Year Anniversary
in 2013

Carroll Community College is observing its 20-year anniversary this year. The state approved the establishment of Carroll Community College with its own governing board on April 14, 1993. Previously the college had been a branch campus of Catonsville Community College. Carroll is the youngest of Maryland’s 16 community colleges.

Carroll began as a branch campus of Catonsville Community College in 1976. Local support for an independent community college in Carroll County grew over the years. In 1993, the Maryland Higher Education Commission granted Carroll its independence as an institution of higher education, which enabled the college to develop its own programs, governance systems, and state and local funding.

In 1993, the first Board of Trustees was appointed by the Governor. The Board selected Dr. Joseph Shields as the college’s first president. Dr. Faye Pappalardo became Carroll’s second president in 1999.

“I am delighted that we are celebrating our 20-year anniversary in 2013,” said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo. “We have seen significant growth in our enrollment, educational programs and facilities. With this growth, we are able to serve a wider range of the educational needs of Carroll County.”

“I believe the story of our college is one of success,” said Dr. Pappalardo. “As I reflect over the past 20 years, I am proud of the accomplishments and achievements of our faculty, staff, and students. I am grateful to our Board of Trustees, our County government, our Foundation, and our many friends who help to support our college.”

Carroll’s 20-year Anniversary celebration kicked off in December at a college-wide meeting for faculty and staff with a retrospective video presentation, followed by an appreciation luncheon in the Great Hall.

On Valentine’s Day, cupcakes were served in the Great Hall to students and employees in appreciation of their contributions to the college.

On March 2, 2013, in conjunction with the Random House Book Fair, visitors enjoyed a college history exhibit and showing of the commemorative video. The President held a 20-year Anniversary luncheon for the Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, Book Fair authors and other invited guests.

On May 29, 2013 the college will hold its 20th Commencement ceremony. This special graduating class will hear words of inspiration from Judy Coen, a former professor, department chair and dean who will serve as Commencement speaker. Coen has 37 years of community college experience, dating back to working at Catonsville Community College prior to her years of service at Carroll.

A college-wide meeting and employee luncheon on May 30, 2013 will conclude the formal observation of the 20-year anniversary.

The 15-minute video commemorating the college’s first 20 years can be viewed on the college’s website.
