Kate Schuit |
On March 9, 2007, Coordinator of Student Life Kate Schuit was named Outstanding Advisor/Mentor by the Maryland Association for Higher Education (MAHE) during the organization’s spring conference at the University of Maryland University College’s Dorsey Station Center. MAHE is a voluntary organization for professionals in post-secondary education in Maryland who are committed to the advancement of higher education.
Schuit was recognized for introducing many new co-curricular program opportunities for students, and in particular, for her creation of the Leadership Challenge Program at Carroll. The one-year program, which is open to all students on campus, began in 2004. It helps students build a portfolio of their accomplishments. These include class papers and projects, letters of recommendation, lists of honors and awards, and a personal mission statement. The portfolio can be used by students when applying for job internships, scholarships, and for transfer to four-year institutions.
Schuit estimates that by the end of this year, about 100 students will have completed the Leadership Challenge Program at Carroll.
“What makes the program unique is that it’s self-directed by the student,” Schuit said. “We offer the tools and opportunities to allow students to shape their individual experience.”
“Kate’s leadership has been a tremendous asset to Carroll Community College,” said Dr. Faye Pappalardo, president of Carroll. “She has been a superb role model for students and an encouraging mentor. I admire her innovative work and her commitment to the learning mission of the college.”
“Kate is well-grounded in the scholarship of student development theory and practice,” said Dr. Jim Ball, vice president of academic and student affairs, and dean of the faculty. “She regularly attends and presents at conferences and has contributed to the professional literature in the field of student affairs.”
MAHE honors those who have provided exemplary service in post-secondary education in Maryland. Winners have been selected for outstanding service by their institution’s colleagues and nominated by the presidents of their institutions. Kate was the second Carroll employee to win the MAHE Outstanding Advisor/Mentor Award. Joyce Sebian won the award in 2002.
