College to Study How RN Students Learn Basic Life Support Skills

The National League for Nursing will collaborate with Laerdal Medical Corporation and the American Heart Association in a new research study to determine how pre-licensure RN nursing students best retain CPR knowledge and skills.

Carroll Community College is one of 10 schools of nursing with associate, diploma, or baccalaureate programs where approaches to learning basic life support (BLS) will be tested.

Students will complete the American Heart Association training in BLS in either a four-to-six-hour, face-to-face course of instruction or through the electronic delivery of information. The performance of all students, both a control and experimental group, will be tested after three, six, nine, and 12 months to determine their level of skill retention.

“I believe our staff is one of the best in the area of nursing,” said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo. “We are delighted and I consider it an honor for Carroll to be chosen to participate in this study.”

“It is prestigious to be selected as part of a national nursing pedagogical study,” said Nancy Perry, director of the Nursing Program. “To be selected as one of ten schools nationally demonstrates the strong nursing program that is in place at Carroll. We are excited to be part of this research into best practices for learning and retaining BLS skills.”
