President Announces Global Awareness Initiative

Dr. Faye Pappalardo
College President

College president Dr. Faye Pappalardo has announced nine strategic initiatives to guide college planning and operations over the next two fiscal years. One initiative is new to the college's Strategic Plan: Incorporate global awareness into the curriculum and co-curricular activities.

"I believe it is the responsibility of higher education to provide our students the opportunity to learn about the world and the interrelationships of national, international, and global issues," declared Dr. Pappalardo. "We are neglecting our duty as educators if we do not make our students globally aware."

Strategic initiatives are added to the college's Strategic Plan by the president of the college in late June, following review and approval by the Board of Trustees. This annual announcement of the president's strategic initiatives may include revisions to existing initiatives in addition to new initiatives. The initiatives guide area annual planning for the coming year and budget development for the following year. For example, the initiatives announced in June 2002 will guide area, office, and employee goal-setting in FY2003 and development of the FY2004 operating budget.

Each fall, the Planning Advisory Council serves as the college's budget committee. The FY2004 budget development calendar is included in this issue of Today.

The president announced a total of nine initiatives for the next two years. The complete set of initiatives follows:

  • Incorporate global awareness into the curriculum and co-curricular activities.
  • Expand credit and noncredit instructional programs and training to address the needs of the community.
  • Implement the integrated enrollment management system.
  • Develop stronger ties with our business partners.
  • Institutionalize assessment into all areas of the college.
  • Implement a yearlong season of lectures and performances in the Scott Center.
  • Strengthen information technology for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Support and enhance professional development for college employees.
  • Broaden strategies to increase financial resources through donor giving.

The vice presidents will present their FY2003 area goals supportive of these initiatives at the first meeting of this year's Planning Advisory Council on September 9, 2002.
