Each student at Carroll
has a different story to tell. Michelle Marie Wolff is practically
bubbling over with enthusiasm when she tells others about the two
years she spent at Carroll.
She loved her instructors. Each one gave her something
new to think about. She described her English instructor Marjorie
Paoletti as "fun and energetic," and said that Sarah Sayre made
science interesting each day through her helpfulness and positive
attitude. She credits Mary Kemp and the Fitness and Wellness course
taken at the college annex her first year with the resolve to start
and keep up a 3-to-5-day-a-week fitness program. "I was thrilled
that the fitness center and gym moved to the Washington Road campus.
It made it more convenient to work out, the building and equipment
were new, and I was always there."
Michelle was able to maintain a 4.0 grade point average
throughout her time at Carroll and for this she received the President's
Academic Excellence Award at Commencement in May. She lauds the
advisers and activities she encountered through Phi Theta Kappa,
an honor society for which she was Vice President of Service. "I
was able to meet other students with similar interests, attend a
Phi Theta Kappa convention, and participate in college-related activities
like the Great American Smokeout and planting snapdragons in front
of the Scott Center as part of a beautification program."
Michelle's advice to others enrolling at Carroll
is to "get involved in clubs from the very beginningdon't
wait like I did. Make friends with the teachers. That way they get
to know you and what you are interested in." Michelle said, "Even
though the President's Award was for merit, I think it helped that
I was active and the instructors knew me."
A graduate of Westminster High School, Michelle enrolled
at Carroll in 2001. She was puzzled over what major to pick because
she didn't know what she wanted to do with her life. By the time
she had graduated from Carroll in 2003, she had made up her mind.
After taking many courses, she decided to major in Business and
to minor in Spanish. She thinks the combination will give her several
career choices.
Michelle will attend McDaniel College in the fall
of 2003 on a $16,000 scholarship. "I never thought I could afford
to go to McDaniel, until I found out about this scholarship opportunity.
I received $5,000 from Phi Theta Kappa and the rest was an academic
award from McDaniel."
