Language Classes for
Non-English Speakers and Those that Serve Them

Carroll Community College continually strives to meet the needs of the community it serves. Continuing Education and Training provides two distinct programs that benefit non-English speaking citizens. One is designed for non-English speakers, and the other for the people that serve them.

As an Official Registered Provider for Command Spanish®, Inc., Carroll provides occupational Spanish language training to the county's workforce. This training is designed to help non-Spanish speaking workers communicate with Spanish-speaking clients, customers and co-workers. Students are taught greetings, phrases, commands and questions that are specific to their occupation without the grammar instruction found in most other language programs.

The College offers Command Spanish®, Inc. for a wide variety of occupational fields, including law enforcement, dental and medical offices, banking and construction. For more information, contact Helen Jones, Director of Career Programs, at 410-386-8113 or hjones@carrollcc.edu.

Last year, Carroll's English For Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program served over 130 students from around the world, including "au pairs" from Eastern Europe, Thailand and Mexico, homemakers and mothers from India, Russia and El Salvador and young men and women from Mexico, China, Indonesia, Columbia and Cuba.

Most students enroll in free classes paid for by a grant from the Maryland State Department of Education. The grant covers classes at the beginning and intermediate level. Each student is individually evaluated to determine the most appropriate course level. The college also offers tuition-based advanced classes to help students further hone their English skills and become more productive employees and members of the community. In addition to the standard advanced English classes, new advanced classes include MS Word and American Culture Using Film.

Carroll's ESOL program has grown to include a course in Basic English Literacy, designed for those who have not learned to read and write in their native language, and ESOL for Parents, a class offered in conjunction with the Carroll County Board of Education's "Families Learning Together"(FLT) program at Robert Moton Elementary School. ESOL for Parents is an English class for adults; the FLT program provides child care and age appropriate activities for children whose parents are studying. The evening ends with a half hour of "Parents and Children Together" time when families read, sing songs and play, in both their native language and English, to enhance their literary skills as a family. For more information on ESOL programs, contact Becki Maurio, ESOL Coordinator, at 410-386-8021 or rmaurio@ carrollcc.edu.

Pete Anania's winter abstract cover design announces the college's noncredit course offerings for January through April, 2003. Courses and programs include new partnerships with the American Institute of Banking (AIB), the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), the Electrical Apprenticeship Program of Carroll County, and the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC). The latter three are four-year apprenticeship programs including HVAC, carpentry, masonry, and electrical journeyman preparation training. The schedule also lists the latest information technology certification training through the I/Tech partnership, including CompTIA Network+, Certified Internet Webmaster, and Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator.

In the area of history, culture, and language, the schedule introduces World View courses, programs, and activities. World View provides perspectives designed to bridge differences and cultivate understanding in a rapidly shrinking world.
