Awards and Accomplishments
in 2009


Various areas within the college received special recognition in 2009, as did many students. The following timeline highlights some of the major accomplishments of the year.

January

Carroll Community College and the Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers partnered to offer continuing legal education courses to Maryland lawyers online, serving lawyers who must remain current in law practices unique to each state.

February

All 13 students enrolled in the 99-hour Pharmacy Technician Training course passed the national certifying exam to become pharmacy technicians.

March

Students Amy Conaway and Abigail Cook were honored by Phi Theta Kappa. Conaway was selected as a 2009 Coca-Cola national finalist, and Cook was honored with second team ranking on a Maryland competition that is part of the All-USA Community College Academic Team. Carroll received the 2009 Datatel Partners in Excellence Award for two-year institutions. The 12th annual Random House Book Fair promoted literacy and local authors, and raised funds for student scholarships.

April

As part of a visit to Westminster for the "Capitol for a Day" initiative, three cabinet secretaries for Governor Martin O'Malley visited Carroll. Secretary of Higher Education James E. Lyons, Sr. met with President Dr. Faye Pappalardo, the Executive Team, and several students. Secretary of the Department of General Services Alvin C. Collins met with vice President Alan Schuman and staff and county representatives. Secretary of the Maryland Department of Disabilities Catherine Raggio visited with disability services and student affairs staff at the college.

May

The first Entrepreneurship Conference was sponsored by the Miller Entrepreneurial Institute. The Early Childhood Education Club was recognized as the Outstanding Club of the year by the Student Government Organization. The first class of Hill Scholars graduated, with 13 students. Continuing Education and Training achieved licensed day camp status through the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for Summer Kids@Carroll.

June

The employee-giving phase of the college's Annual Campaign ended with 92 percent of employees contributing, with most gifts supporting student scholarships.

July

Dr. Pappalardo officially marked her 10th anniversary as President of Carroll Community College.

August

The County Commissioners, Board of Trustees, faculty and staff celebrated Dr. Pappalardo's 10-year anniversary at the college-wide meeting. A retrospective video presentation highlighted many of the President's accomplishments. The college received a grant from the state of Maryland for $1.1 million to help the Nursing Program accept entering classes in the spring semester, allowing the program to accommodate an additional 40 students annually. Carroll introduced an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Health Information Technology.

September

Fall credit enrollment increased an unprecedented 13 percent.

October

Internationally-known "Lean" Consultant Russ Scaffede spoke at Carroll, with business and community representatives in attendance. The college celebrated the accomplishments of 30 Adult Education students who completed their GED or National External Diploma programs and earned their high school diplomas. The Carroll Community College Mediation Center celebrated one year under the auspices of Carroll Community College. A week of activities to bring community attention to peaceful conflict resolution included an open house, a mediation ethics class, and a celebration of Conflict Resolution Day at the college.

November

The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations bestowed five Medallion Awards to Carroll for marketing publications produced by the college's Publications and Communications Design office.

December

The College Foundation office successfully held another "Starry Night" event, complete with delicious food, wonderful decorations, and a show-stopping performance by musical entertainers "Barrage." Proceeds benefited student scholarships at the college.
