This winter, faculty and staff at the college continue to demonstrate an attitude of striving for excellence. The dedication and commitment of our employees are second to none. As I travel around the region on behalf of the college, I am proud to share Carroll’s fine accomplishments and accolades.

Let me begin by wholeheartedly welcoming new Board of Trustees member Kelly Frager. I believe Kelly will be a great addition to the Board.

Excellence in action is evident through several of the stories in this issue, including stories about awards, activities and partnerships.

Instructor Carole Williamson was designated a “Master Leader in Education” by Exchange, an international education journal.Williamson’s leadership and strong knowledge base made her stand out among her peers as she prepares future teachers of young children.

Another excellent endeavor is the Little Free Libraries, a joint venture among community groups who saw a need for making reading accessible to all. The story in this issue describes these special kiosks, how they work and who is behind this novel idea.

Excellence in developing community partnerships is a hallmark of our college. For the nineteenth year, the college will hold the Penguin Random House Book Fair. National authors, discounted book sales and fun activities make this event a real crowd pleaser. The partnership with Penguin Random House makes a strong statement to the community that literacy is important and must be cultivated.

The college’s excellence is monitored and reported in its annually-updated Institutional Effectiveness Assessment Report. Sixty measures, evaluating all aspects of the college’s mission, are compared to benchmark or target values established by me in conjunction with the Planning Advisory Council. The report is shared with the Board of Trustees and the Board of County Commissioners.

Finally, excellence in keeping our college community safe and secure is the theme of the story on our memorandum of understanding between the college and Family and Children’s Services in Westminster.

In closing, I wish to thank you for your role in making our efforts in pursuit of excellence possible. I thank you on behalf of each and every student who enters to learn.

Dr. James D. Ball
President
