Amy Conaway

Amy Conaway has a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts from McDaniel College and decided to pursue a second degree at Carroll Community College in Accounting. Her interest in the field, combined with a changing economic landscape, convinced her that a Carroll degree would help her weather a challenging employment outlook.

Since enrolling at Carroll, Conaway has excelled in many ways. Her academic performance and community service record recently garnered Conaway a prestigious national award.

Conaway’s 4.0 G.P.A., the stage of her degree completion, and her campus and community involvement, resulted in her selection as a 2009 Coca-Cola national finalist. She will receive a check for $1,000. Conaway competed nationally against thousands of other students for the honor. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation award is administered by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the national honor society for community colleges.

Conaway is the founder of the campus Green Team, a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and a Leadership Challenge Program participant. She is also a volunteer for the Westminster chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation, a volunteer for Manos Unidas (United Hands of Carroll County, Inc.), and a former classroom volunteer at Friendship Valley Elementary School.

College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo, said, “This is certainly an outstanding honor for Amy and for the college.”

PTK Advisor Judy Samuels said, “Amy is a prime example of what a self-directed learner can accomplish.”

A second Carroll student, Abigail Cook, was also honored recently with second team ranking on a Maryland competition that is part of the All-USA Community College Academic Team. This honor is based on her outstanding G.P.A. and her community and campus involvement. PTK also administers this competition.

Cook is president of the Student Government Organization, a PTK member, a new student orientation assistant, and a participant in the Leadership Challenge Program.

“Abby is a compassionate and articulate young woman who is most deserving of her award,” said Dr. Pappalardo.

“Abby defines the heart of a Carroll student, whose campus and community involvement has served to provide greater outreach than just to her local community,” said Samuels.
